A body of drawing and sculptural work in response to the closeness and distance felt upon viewing the PROJECT ENDEAVOUR Archives, housed at John Curtin's Prime Ministerial Library. The archive chronicles Jon Sander’s triple-solo circumnavigation of the world by yacht, between the 25th of May 1986 and the 31st of March 1988. The drawings reimagine a sequence of photographs taken on the day to which the title refers and the objects make manifest the textures and materials flattened within the frames. The body of work seeks to investigate the complexities of recording solo travel in an era pre-dating the digital camera. Materials used reference sailing and were combined with delicate drawing and print techniques, to propose an alternative form and voice for the collection.
AT SEA 9TH OCTOBER (I, II, III, V and VI) were acquired by private collectors. AT SEA 9TH OCTOBER 1986 (IV) was originally acquired by the John Curtin Primeministerial Library and then transferred to the Curtin University Art Collection. The artwork is currently displayed at Curtin University Library, level 3 on the south side of the building, to coincide with the 30th Anniversary of Project Endeavour.
Many thanks to the library staff Deanne Barrett and Sally Laming for their openness to facilitate my artistic engagement with the collection.
